What is leaky gut? It is a condition of the intestines. Barrier cells also called epithelial cells cover our intestines. Their work is to make sure that no undigested food particles, digestive waste, or toxins get into your blood-stream. These create conditions of inflammation and various digestive disorders. When things work the way they are suppose to work, the epithelial cells are supported by a balanced microbiome (an environment of good and bad bacteria). A nutrient rich diet supports this condition. When the person has a bad diet, lacks exercise, experiences stress, and uses antibiotics, they risk getting leaky gut. Under these conditions the epithelial cells stretch out so that there are big gaps between these cells . When this happens, undigested food, digestive waste, and toxins can leak out of the intestinal tract causing inflammation and digestive disorders This is what we call leaky gut.
How do you know if you are suffering from leaky gut. If you have diabetes, heart disease, cancer, autoimmune disease, asthma, depression, autism, you may have leaky gut. Your gut is your 2nd brain. It regulates mood, digestion, and sleep. The immunes system is going to be activated. Basically you have an intestinal tract. It has one cell lining it, epithelial cells. On one side you have the blood and immune system. On the other side is food and poop. If they interact, you get problems. The broken down food should be filtered through the blood stream. When the cells that cover the intestinal tract come apart, food, and bacteria and other toxins leak in and it gets exposed to your immune system. It triggers an immune response. One of the hall-marks of aging is problems with the microbiome. Some people age faster than others. Increased intestinal permeability is the medical term for it. Leaky gut is what we call it. Then you get bacterial toxins, viruses, food proteins, and your immune system goes nuts and you get all the diseases. So to fix your gut, it is the first thing that you must do to get better health.
The following is an experience of one elderly man. He looks to be in his seventies. He had a frozen shoulder. Dr.s didn’t know what caused it. And he had high blood pressure. They didn’t know what caused it. He also had skin irritation. The drs. didn’t know the cause of that problem. Every time they gave him more medicine. He knows it takes time to implement all the diet changes. He knows that his health journey will be different from others who might take a similar course of action. In summary, the meds didn’t help. But eliminating certain foods did show improvement. And he was willing to give it time.
So, how should you heal leaky gut? Eat what your microbiome likes, fruit, vegetables, seeds, nuts, and beans. We need to eat real foods. Foods that don’t have pesticides, that aren’t stored in plastics, that are not genetically altered, that don’t have food additives, nor have nano particles or have heavy metals. Water bottles if stored in a hot environment leeches plastic into the water. We should use caution for most of the packaged food in the middle isles of the grocery stores. In these modern times we have to spend more time discerning what is acceptable and what isn’t. If you read the ingredient list and you can’t pronounce it, don’t buy it. If we don’t make it our business to keep up with all the food industry, latest tricks to prolong shelf-life we will suffer the consequences. Leaky gut if not taken care of leads to leaky brain–your most precious organ.
