Back in the day when weedeaters first came out, I thought it was the greatest invention. Living on several acres, it necessitates some sort of weed management. And I thought weedeaters were the answer. This new wonder machine came with a stick. On one end was the on and off switch, and the other end was where all the work was done. I could not believe how a string could cut weeds. But it did and I was pleased with the outcome. Ours was an electric powered model. It had a spool with plastic wire. As you finished the spool that came with it, you could either buy new spools or you could wind the string yourself with wire you buy seperate in bulk.

Let me tell you, the decisions you make in this life have a profound effect on the outcome of your situation. Being the cheapy that I am, I spent more time winding the spool than working the weeds. It was so frustrating. I would get the spool wound neatly, and you have to hold the wire in place while attaching it to the weedeater. It would work for about 5 minutes and then it would break down again. This process would repeat itself over the next few hours and I would end up totally discouraged and get nothing done. Over the years, going through about 3 or 4 weed eaters, I learned my lesson. Yes, buy the spools already wound. You save yourself frustration and get a nice chunk of work done.
Another problem with our electric powered machine was that it was electric. You could weedeat so far and that was it. Then you have to get an extension cord to cover a bigger area from your power source. By the time you add so many extension cords, guess what, the thing slows down. It wasn’t as powerful. Another pet peeve with the extension cords was winding them up and carrying them back to the house. They were super heavy. Well, you might say, why don’t I just get a gas powered weedeater? That didn’t work for my situation because it required you to carry the fuel one your back. Not only was this heavy, the possibility for fire scared me. For men who don’t mind those conditions, gas powered is the way to go.

Then, along comes the battery powered version. I am very pleased with this type of weedeater. But it wasn’t always that way in the beginning. We stored our weed eater in the garage with the battery. You might think this is reasonable. But let me tell you about the garage and batteries. They are not compatible. I learned that the hard way. Yes, garages are not particularly warm. We have vents in the bottom of the walls. I don’t really know why they are there. The house came built that way. But batteries and temperature sensesative. In California where we live, we have a rainy season in the winter months and it is rainless all the rest of the year. The more rain we get in the winter, the more weeds come up in the spring. So you can understand the weed problem that comes along with the rain. After several drought years, you realize what a blessing it is to get enough rain making it a mixed blessing. So while the weedeater is not used in the winter, it is stored in the garage. The first battery we had plugged in the wall charging all winter. Turned out that it was perfectly useless in the spring when we needed it. I vowed never to buy another battery powered contraption again. Then I learned from other people who used battery powered blowers that you charge the battery inside the house and you don’t leave it charging indefinitely. They don’t tell you those things when you purchase these new things. You have to read blogs like this to get smart. So, yep, you guessed it, I bought another weed eater battery style. I have had my present battery several years. That is a huge improvement over the early years. I don’t want to get political, but there has been talk that all our present day technology will become obsolete in the near future.

Another feature on my battery powered model is that you can get more string while using the weedeater. You hit the ground with the part where the string comes out. This is the cap that holds the string in place. It is very strategically located. By the time you finish your project, you will have hit the ground several times while it is rotating. This causes wear and tare. Over time, this cap wears very thin, making a hole in it, and rendering it useless.
So off to Home Depot you go to buy a replacement cap. This worked well until newer models came out and Home Depot stopped supplying parts for older models. Lucky for me, I searched the internet and found the part that was needed at a drastically reduced price.
So, in the future, if you should find yourself in a situation where weeds are an overwhelming problem, you will know what to do and how to do it.
