Summer Hot Survival Days
August 1, 2024

It was a lazy summer day in the back hills of South Dakota.  Not much going on as the heat settled like a sweltering hot, smothering blanket  on the small town where Susy Q lived.   Susy Q and her husband  Tom didn’t have air conditioning, not even a swamp cooler.  They couldn’t afford the high utility bills that came with the enjoyment of such luxury.   The Bidenomics caught Susy ill prepared.  She had been canning tomatoes that were harvested out of their own backyard that Tom had planted.    The tomatoes that were produced were a few pride possessions that this couple had.  They gave some to the neighbors who, in turn, gave them some of their zuchinni.   Canning those tomatoes was one way to make ends meet during the cold bitter days of winter.   Tom worked hard as a mechanic.  And when he got home all he wanted was to sit with a nice cold beer in front of the news.

Susy Q  found a new portable inexpensive cooler online that she thought might work to cool their place a little bit.   These hot scourging days had lasted for a few weeks now.   And the prospect of the weather making a change for  cooler days was not in the forecast.    She asked Tom for his opinion.   He didn’t mind as long as the monthly bills were paid first.

The chillwell as it was called came 10 days later and the heat had still not subsided.   You had to fill it with water to the fill-line.   Plug it in with a USB.   It will last about an hour after it is charged.   But if you are home  and you want to run it all day,  you have to keep it plugged in and watch the water line to keep it filled with water.   so, Susy Q and Tom were cool as long as they stayed home.  But that didn’t help Tom as he had to work in the sweltering heat.   Susy decided to search the internet again.   This time she found a cooler similar to the chillwell that you wear around the neck.   It blows cool or icy cold air up to the chin and down the chest.    It is similar to the chillwell but needs to be charged with the usb so can only be used intermitantlly.  It would probably work none stop if you have 2 of them.  While wearing one the other would be busy charging.  The cost of the wearable cooler is around $20 more or less with careful shopping.
